In Anaheim earlier in April, MyTakeOnTV joined some of our press colleagues for round table interviews with the cast of LUCIFER at Wonder Con 2017.  Rachael Harris (Dr Linda) was full of excitement about what’s coming for the rest of Season 2, which resumes tonight on FOX at 9/8c.

On learning Lucifer/Maze/Amenadiel’s secrets: “It was very symbolic that she was able to say “I’m going to accept this about you even though you have so much shame and want to hide it.”  There’s a great scene…where I say… “why don’t you trust her?  I’m still here and I still care for you.”  I think that’s all of our greatest fears.  If you see how low self esteem I have, you will run.  It’s such a great thing that she says, no, it’s okay.

On whether there will be repercussions from what happened when we last saw these folks: “Mmm hmm…” she laughs. “You know God appears, Timothy Omundson.  Linda’s reaction to meeting God is pretty awesome.  And then I think what we see, repercussions of her yes, committing to Maze and committing to Lucifer.  Everyone; they’re her friends and she’s very loyal to them.  When some entity tries to get information from her, has catastrophic consequences to it.  And you get to see just how far Linda will go to take care of her friends.  Things come back to haunt her a little bit.  We will get to know more about Linda in one of the one-off’s [next year].”

Asked about what input she has on her character at this point: “I said, I would really enjoy doing some more dramatic aspects of the show, and that’s where I think “Monster” started happening, the episode “Monster” where he revealed himself, and I was like, we can go further!  So they heard me when I said I would like to do something more dramatic.  Things get real.  Scary and honest.”

On what to expect, she teases “I have a stunt double! That doesn’t say anything, but it says something.”

Check out the video above for the full interview with Rachael and be sure to catch all new episodes of LUCIFER through May/June!

WonderCon 2017: LUCIFER’s Lesley-Ann Brandt on what’s next for Maze

While in Anaheim for WonderCon 2017, we had the chance to sit with Lesley-Ann Brandt (Mazikeen) to talk about the return of LUCIFER and what we can expect.  In the video above, she goes into detail about the rewards of playing this character, and how her relationship with Scarlett Estevez (Trixie) is off-screen, among a few other topics.  LUCIFER is back at 9/8c tonight – check out the above for a preview of why to tune in!

On adding layers to this character: “[It’s] very rewarding. I’ve been able to take a character that could very easily just be a bad ass and one note, and give her layers and points of view that maybe the audience didn’t really expect to see so much humanity come through this season, so that’s been really fun to explore.  I think the writers have just been very smart about giving her as many facets as possible and in that, making her really relatable – the friendship wth Linda is super relatable.  Women, two strong women, coming out as a demon, a lot of the people from the gay community were like, i’ve had the conversation, I can relate.”

On Maze and Chloe co-habitating: “I think they saw the chemistry with me and Scarlett, and obviously the antagonistic relationship with Chloe and that would be an interesting dynamic to throw in there.  I thought they were really clever about how they introduced it and where they’ve taken it.”

On Maze’s best trait: “Her loyalty to her friends or people that she cares about.  And I think that’s my most relatable trait, actually to her as Lesley-Ann.  You see that more and more with those relationships like Trixie and Chloe.”

On Maze handling Lucifer being gone: “I don’t think she’s really that happy that she doesn’t know what’s going on, but he’s done this before.  It hits Chloe more than anyone else because of the nature of their relationship and obviously what’s happened, the kiss.  I think she’s probably more annoyed that she doesn’t know what the big picture is, and that comes to a head in 217.”

On Amenadiel: “I think they’ll always be connected in the sense that she did take his virginity, but I think she’s not a girl who is hung up on one specific thing.  Maze, the thing that you’l find out about demons in our show -they have no soul, so they live in the moment and they go with the flow, and that’s very much what the character is. I think they’re always connected because of that, and at the end of that episode, he’s decided to stay and be a part of the team.”

On her relationship with “Trixie” off screen: “I love Scarlett so much.  We’ve had playdates with our dogs.  It’s tricky with her because she has to do school, so she’l finish a scene, and the rules are that she has to do 20 minutes of school, so she goes right to the tutor.  She always comes up and wants to feel the baby; i’ve told her to think of some names to help me.  I’ve always wondered how parents do that with kids in the business, but Sam, her mother, and her dad, they’ve done such an amazing job.  She’s the most normal, down to earth little girl, you’ll ever meet, and still very much a kid, and then come action, so professional and knows her lines. She’s definitely one of my faves; I love my Maze and Trixie scenes.”

LUCIFER is back tonight – you don’t want to miss the new episodes.  This show is so much fun and I’m so glad we’re getting S3 next season!

WonderCon 2017: Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson preview S2 (and S3) of LUCIFER

Two of MToT’s favorite showrunners/EPs are Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson from FOX’s LUCIFER.  Always excited to talk about their show, these two joined us in Anaheim at WonderCon 2017 to talk about the end of Season 2 and what we should expect from Season 3 and the 4 standalone episodes ordered by FOX.

Check out the video above for more, but here are some highlights:

On the four standalones, Ildy says: The four episodes – they call them standalone episodes. they’re really not, in that they a move our characters quite deeper – for example, one episode focuses only on Maze, and we get to really understand what this poor demon who doesn’t have a soul – does she really have a soul? What does it mean to have a soul? And there are also little mythological nuggets that are in each one where somebody just throws out a line, and you go “what did you just say”?

Joe jumps in to add: “What does that mean? We know where we want those episodes to air in Season 3. What we did is we basically broke episodes that if they aired in S2, would set up stories in Season 3, or if they aired in Season 3, they would just more immediately set up the story. hopefully if you’re watching season 3, you’ll be going “was that a standalone or was that a regular episode?” They do fold in rather nicely. We knew no matter what…we wanted them to move the story forward. Personally, that’s what we watch the show for. That’s what I watch all of my shows for. What it allows us to do is play. We made an episode that’s a little darker and weirder. we made an episode that’s a little more fun. The Maze episode is like a Bond movie. It’s really cool. It’s both not our show at all and it’s totally our show. It’s sort of let us open up what the show is about.”

Did these new episodes impact the end of Season 2? Joe tells us, “Not at all. What’s nice, we were always building an 18 episode arc. They didn’t try to make us fat, they didn’t try to make us add 4 episodes in the middle. They ere like we love this arc, we’re really happy with where you are. have fun. they really encouraged us to go off format.”

On crossovers with the DC universe on TV: Joe says, “The thing about our show – we can kind of do anything. we have a little bit of a license to we don’t take our selves too seriously, i think if Batman did show up, I don’t know, maybe not so weird!”

LUCIFER starts with all new episodes tonight at 9/8c – definitely check it out!!

WonderCon 2017: Kevin Alejandro previews LUCIFER’s return

At WonderCon 2017 early in April, we spent some time with fellow press at round tables to discuss what’s coming next for LUCIFER and “Detective Douche” when new episodes resume tonight at 9/8c.  Kevin Alejandro previewed what he wants to see for Dan, and how he and Tom sometimes improv their way through bro-scenes.

On being heretofore known as “Detective Douche”: “That’s given the audience something to hold onto.  Don’t take it away if it’s not broken.”

On wanting to see Dan become a villain: “He always makes these decisions, for good reasons, but it always ends up being sort of shady, you know, like shooting a person.  I would like something big to happen, he has to make another choice; it just pulls the rug out from everything…he turns into like the ultimate force/villain to reckon with.”

On seeing more Dan/Lucifer buddy cop moments: “Definitely, you will definitely see that.  When they wrote a scene where Dan has finally had enough of it….he steps up to him.  That opened up a whole new world of Dan stepping up to Lucifer so now there’s all of this really funny banter back and forth that they put into the show and that we also improv back and forth.  I think people are really going to enjoy that aspect, instead of always being a doormat.”

On repercussions from what we’ve seen: “Dan, he’s in the dark, about this whole celestial world.  he’s kind of like the dumb guy…he definitely has encounters with them, but he still doesn’t know this world that is Lucifer….I think eventually I kind of want to know, because it gives this guy a lot of, strange, constantly calling him weird.  I think it’s really funny that he doesn’t know…It’s so logical. It would just turn his world upside down.”

On the rest of this season: “They’re peppering a bunch of different things in – we’re in a whirlwind of trying to finish Season 2 and pepper in storylines and details that make you want to come back for season 3.  The good thing about getting a Season 3 is that it gives us time to breathe and deal with them on a more evolutionary level, let it breathe, instead of rushing through it.”

On the standalone episodes: “There is a Dan episode.  It’s not just me; but I’m pretty heavy in it.  You get to figure a little bit how he ticks.  I think it’s really awesome that they’re able to do that.  Give everybody a chance to be their own person and let you guys decide if you like or dislike him.”

On having scenes with other cast members: “I love, love, love working with Tom and Lauren. But I just did a really cools scene with Rachael. That woman is amazing.  You cannot look her straight in the eye without laughing. We are going to see other worlds, they’re peppering things in. I do get some scenes with Amenadiel…you get to see how those two guys could have a relationship, or how they relate.”

On improvisation: “We do what they write because they’re really good at it; you don’t have to change it because they’re so good.  The directors and eeeryone is really good about giving us one take to do whatever we want to.  Sometimes it makes it into the show and sometimes it doesn’t.  We know these guys so well!  We can ham them up; sometimes we ham them up and they’re like…..”that’s too much!””

On the end of the season: “Your socks will be BLOWN off!  Enter into a world that you don’t expect!”

Linda went through Hell in Season 2 as she learned a little bit more about LUCIFER and his crazy family. We spent some time with Rachael Harris talking about what exactly that might mean for Linda as Season 3 kicks off. She knows a lot more than she probably wants to know, and where does that leave her?

Tricia Helfer previews Charlotte’s return to LUCIFER

When we last saw Tricia Helfer’s Charlotte on LUCIFER, the spirit of Mom had been sent into the void and the ball-busting lawyer was left battered and confused. Though she’s been gone for the first few episodes of the season, Charlotte makes her return to the LUCIFER fold in Monday’s all new episode, “Welcome Back, Charlotte Richards.”

I spent some time chatting with Tricia about what’s coming up for Charlotte, the impact it has on the team, and what it’s like to play a completely different character in Season 3. Plus, Tricia offered up some scoop about how the BATTLESTAR GALACTICA reunions over the summer kickstarted a new endeavor.

We saw Mom go off into the void, so talk a little bit about bringing Charlotte to this world.
It’s been a fun challenge playing an all new character [laughs]. She was a sharp attorney, extremely good at her job as a criminal defense lawyer. She isn’t a bad person herself. In one way, kind of bad by association, pushed the boundaries in order to do her job well. And overlooked a lot of things and that top of thing. She’s really been shaken to the core because she’s facing basically a four month blackout where she knows nothing but she’s told about all these and thinks that she got up to and so basically she wakes up from what she thinks is a four month blackout and has to kind of try and piece her life back together. Which Mom left it with challenges [laughs]. Her husband took the children and left, and she’s got to pick the pieces up at work.  She’s having these flashes, these nightmares. She doesn’t know what they are, but she assumes, like any logical human, that, especially when in your job your mind or your sharpness is something that’s integral, she assumes that maybe she’s just having a nervous breakdown.

That’s almost worse than a lot of things. It means you’re not control of yourself and your mind, right? She doesn’t even go so far as to assume that there’s something worse than that. In the realm of Lucifer, obviously when somebody dies, you only go one or two places. So she’s not allowing herself to go there yet. She’s just kind of assuming she’s having a nervous breakdown. Throughout her discovery in the first episode back, she realizes it may even have been darker than what she’s thinking.  She ends up trying to figure it out, she’s grasping at straws, but trying to put together a facade, so that will crack in Monday night’s episode.

And then you know ultimately she’s going to discover that she needs to try do better and be a better person. And that’s going to be a lot of her quest this season, is not only getting her life back on track, but trying to be better, and do better.  That’s hard for somebody. Mom was a little awkward, a fish out of water, with human mannerisms, and things. She knew about humans, but some little things went over her head a bit.  With Charlotte, she can be a bit of a cold person, and she doesn’t have a lot of empathy for people.  She’s really going to be shaken to the core and trying to figure out her life. She’s going to have ebbs and flows; she thinks she’s getting it figured out. And then you know you have another down period and realize you’re kind of covering it and not really facing your fears. She’s going to be on a bit of a roller coaster.

LUCIFER: Tricia Helfer in the“Welcome Back Charlotte Richards” episode of LUCIFER airing Monday, Oct.30 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. CR: John P Fleenor/FOX

It’s got to be exciting.  Probably exciting to play the mother of Lucifer, right, but now you have this whole other level to explore.
Absolutely. My concern was where does she fit into the story, but I totally trust in the writers’ room, knowing that they were going to make her a fully fleshed out character and things. It is kind of funny. Last season, I was so much working with Tom and DB, my sons, and now this season, I’m working with so many of the other characters instead and I’m barely ever on set with Tom and DB.  I haven’t had a scene with DB yet. It’s like “where are you; where’s my Amenadiel?”

What are the ramifications of new Charlotte and the relationship she had or has with Dan? He kind of fell for her, didn’t he?
He did fall for her! Dan get sthe short end of the stick a lot [laughs]. Charlotte has no idea who this guy is, and she definitely is kind of pushing him away, and he’s not somebody that he would normally, the good guy, is not somebody that she normally would give any attention to. THat’s not to say that throughout the season, I don’t know exactly where we’re going with it yet, but she does sort of start to rely on him in ways, and there may be something there yet.  Certainly in the beginning, Dan gets his ego bruised yet.

You mention not knowing exactly where things are going, but has there been talk of an overall arc or theme for Charlotte this season?
With Charlotte, I don’t know where it’s ending up in the season. I haven’t had that convo yet. In the break, we all sat down with the writers to talk about the characters but because I hadn’t read about Charlotte yet, because she wasn’t in the first few episodes, it was like, you guys gotta give me something first before I have any questions.  I’m due to sit down with them and see where she’s going! [laughs].  This season really is about her identity and trying to figure out.  She knows who she was and she knows that she’s missing this time that she doesn’t really understand – nervous breakdown, went to Hell – doesn’t really, there’s a lot that she’s trying to grasp onto; on the off-chance that there really was something really dark about it, she’s trying to do better, be a better person so that ultimately she doesn’t end up in that same spot at some point.

But you know, you are inherently who you are, right? She’s maybe not fully grasped that she has to turn a new leaf, or whatever that expression is.  Yes, she has to be a better person, instead of acting to be a better person.  I don’t know if it’s the following episode, or it’s coming up soon after, but she grasps onto the Ella Lopez, Aimee Garcia’s character. Last season, Ella said to Mom “there’s a lightness about you,” but when she sees Charlotte, she says “there’s a darkness about you.” There’s a fun episode that Aimee and I had where Charlotte kind of zeroes in on Ella and is like, I’m going to figure out being good by being around you, which sends Ella into fit, which we don’t usually see.  All of a sudden, this person that she sees darkness in is around her all the time. That was a really fun episode to shoot!. For the rest, where we are now, there’s going to be ebbs and flows. She’s thinking she’s getting it on track. She’s doing better, she’s starting to work with the prosecution instead of defense, and then she’s kind of shaken again, and she realizes she was putting on a facade instead of changing, so it’s going to be a roller coaster for her.  Her struggles are very human, unlike Mom, and what brought her here, Charlotte, I think we’ll be able to relate to her struggles in some way.

You mention something universal – trying to find yourself. That’s what makes the show that’s about the devil, and his mother, and brother, and God. It’s so relateable because there is such a human struggle with every character.
This season, with every character, is a lot about identity. Certainly for Charlotte. For Lucifer – at the beginning of the season, he’s like, I’m the Devil.  He’s grasping back onto that part of his identity. Amenadiel is trying to figure out, still, why he’s here, and why his father put him here.  Linda almost died because of Mom last year, and she’s trying to figure everything out.  And Maze, everybody is going through their own bit of identity crisis this season it seems.

What are you hearing on social media from fans about Charlotte or what they hope to see?
It’s so funny! I kind of lost it on Twitter or Instagram (@TruTriciaHelfer/@officialtriciahelfer) I posted a picture of me and Aimee on set the other day – somebody wrote back “Spoiler!”  it’s like, I’m back!  We’ve known it for months! [laughs]. I’m amazed that some people are watching my Twitter or Instagram feed and they still haven’t figured out that Charlotte is coming back. I think some people still think Mom is going to be coming back, and I’ve heard a lot of people that are excited.  The majority of people who have tweeted are like, we’re going to miss Mom, but we’re excited to see what Charlotte is about. I hope that I portray this new character and make them see the difference in it. I’m excited to see what they think Monday!  Most people just want to know “who is she?”

What else have you been working on besides LUCIFER?
I went and did a Hallmark Summer movie that aired.  It was an extremely fast turnaround – I got to work with one of my old BATTLESTAR costars, Paul Campbell, a lovely guy.  It was a complete opposite!  Just a normal, sweet woman trying to find romance and all that. It’s nice every once in a while to just do something completely opposite, and go yeah, I’m going to be the romantic partner, on the beach in Cancún. It was definitely a lovely month! So, then was busy with a couple of BATTLESTAR reunion panels this summer – ATX, Entertainment Weekly brought us in for a reunion panel, so that was really fun, and we did one at Comic Con, and Marc Bernardin, a writer/journalist moderated one of the panels, and he and I were talking, and it sparked this idea – we’ve only done one episode but we’re about tape another one, we’re doing a podcast, a re-watch of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, so we’re going to do a podcast for every episode. There’s one for THE WEST WING, and we’re attempting to do that as well.  There will be some information soon about where it’s going to land, but we’re going to pre-tape a couple of episodes.

I love a good BATTLESTAR re-watch!
Exactly! [laughs] The idea was sparked because we were talking and I was like, I haven’t seen it. I watched it when it aired, but some of the episodes were rough cuts, and not the final version. I was like, I really want to go back and watch it now that it’s been a span of time, and he goes, why don’t we do it on a podcast, so I’m really looking forward to it!

LUCIFER airs Mondays at 8/7c on FOX.
