WHAT IS IT? LUCIFER – The Devil has come to Los Angeles…Based upon the characters created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg for DC Entertainment’s Vertigo imprint, LUCIFER is the story of the original fallen angel. Bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, LUCIFER MORNINGSTAR (Tom Ellis, “Merlin”) has abandoned his throne and retired to L.A., where he owns Lux, an upscale nightclub. Charming, charismatic and devilishly handsome, Lucifer is enjoying his retirement, indulging in a few of his favorite things – wine, women and song – when a beautiful pop star is brutally murdered outside of Lux. For the first time in roughly 10 billion years, he feels something awaken deep within him as a result of this murder. Compassion? Sympathy? The very thought disturbs him – as well as his best friend and confidante, MAZIKEEN aka MAZE (Lesley-Ann Brandt, “The Librarians”), a fierce demon in the form of a beautiful young woman. The murder attracts the attention of LAPD homicide detective CHLOE DANCER (Lauren German, “Chicago Fire”), who initially is dismissive of Lucifer. But she becomes intrigued by his talent for drawing out people’s secrets and his desire to dispense justice, doling out punishment to those who deserve it. As they work together to solve the pop star’s murder, Lucifer is struck by Chloe’s inherent goodness. Accustomed to dealing with the absolute worst of humanity, Lucifer is intrigued by Chloe’s apparent purity and begins to wonder if there’s hope for his own soul yet. At the same time, God’s emissary, the angel AMENADIEL (DB Woodside, “Suits,” “24”), has been sent to Los Angeles to convince Lucifer to return to the underworld…can the Devil incarnate be tempted toward the side of Good, or will his original calling pull him back toward Evil?
WHO IS IN IT? Tom Ellis, Lauren German, Rachael Harris, DB Woodside, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Nicholas Gonzalez, Scarlett Estevez

Comic Con 2015: The cast and creatives behind LUCIFER give us the scoop

Tonight on FOX (9/8c), do yourself a favor and spend some time with Lucifer Morningstar, the devil himself, as he takes a vacation from Hell to somehow end up helping the LAPD solve crimes.  Sounds like a stretch, sure, but Tom Ellis, and his chemistry with everyone he talks to, period, makes the show better than your average supernatural dramedy. LUCIFER comes from the DC comics world, where the devil was most popular as a supporting character in The Sandman series.  Here, he’s a charming Brit who gets people to tell him their deepest secrets. When German’s Chloe Decker seems immune to his charms, he finds himself drawn to her, to helping her solve crimes, and to generally bothering her on the daily. Her daughter (Scarlett Estevez), a couples’ therapist (Rachael Harris), his “brother” Amenadial (DB Woodside), Chloe’s ex (Kevin Alejandro), and Lucy’s ally Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt) round out the cast.

We spent time with the cast and crew of LUCIFER at Comic Con over the summer – check out the playlist above for some great insight into the show, where they can go with it, and why you should watch!

Name of the Episode: “Wingman”

Spoilers!!!

Remind me – what is this show? Lucifer is loosely based on the character of Lucifer Morningstar, aka the Devil, aka Satan, aka the Lord of Lies. This Lucifer was created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg in their critically acclaimed comic series The Sandman. In which his personality was based off John Milton’s Paradise Lost, and drawn to look like David Bowie. The television series follows Lucifer, portrayed by Tom Ellis, who has abandoned his throne in Hell to take up residence in the city of Angels, Los Angeles. When a pop star whom he helped get to the top, stops in for a chat turns deadly, Lucifer must help the police find the killers. This initial case leads Lucifer to meet Chloe Decker (Lauren German) a cop with something to prove.

What happened last week? The first six episodes of Lucifer were a great start to this DC Elseworld story and it continues with the seventh. We ended the sixth episode with Lucifer having his wings stolen from a shipping crate. So naturally, in episode seven, Lucifer must find his divine pieces from heaven before they fall into the wrong hands. When he runs out of people to torture for information, he must seek out advice from Chloe, who knew there was more to the crate than just Russian nesting dolls.

As for Chloe, her subplot with the open investigation on the comatose cop, Malcolm, is making her even more of an outcast at work because Malcolm’s wife wants to pull the plug. Dan (Kevin Alejandro) tells Chloe, in his own special way, that she has 24 hours to wrap up the case. Dan gave a great speech and Chloe agreed that a dying man’s family doesn’t need to suffer because of an ongoing investigation after his death.

Lucifer stops by to get his advice from Chloe, only to find she needs the same thing he does, a wingman. Chloe explains to Lucifer that sometimes when you run into a dead end, a fresh set of eyes on the case always helps. Chloe begins to ask Lucifer for help, but he is already off to seek help from his brother, the current placeholder for him in Hell, Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside).

Amenadiel has no sympathy for the devil as he lectures him and then tells him to fix his own damn mistakes before leaving. With nowhere else to turn, Lucifer heads back to Chloe’s to ask for her help, but she already has the help he is offering, from Dan. Chloe, being the angel she is, suggests they all work together.

Lucifer and Dan help Chloe as they both compete for her affection. What with Lucifer flashing huge wads of cash and cracking jokes, Dan tries the more stable and compassionate approach. The pissing contest is broken up when the APB on the angel wings comes through. The FBI had been tracking black market religious items and the wings were being auctioned off that night. Chloe and Lucifer are told the FBI were going to raid it and if they were Lucifer’s wings, he could get them back after the proper paperwork was filed.

The Prince of Darkness has no time for bureaucratic bullshit and decides to take matters into his own hands. Amenadiel surprises Lucifer by coming to the auction in supportive fashion. After flashing his signature silver coin, the two gain access to the man who is running the auction. Amen gets a little heated when trying to get the wings back, so Lucifer is forced to tell Amen that he is mortal. Forcing them into some of the best meta religious jokes yet:

Amenadiel: ‘Paul’s wrists were too thick to fit in those chains.’
Lucifer: ‘I know that man never could pass under zirk.’
Together: ‘He should have been the Saint of Funny Cakes.’

Chloe shows up because she is a great cop and knew Lucifer would go. The FBI raids the place and Lucifer finds out that his wings are a very convincing replica with the auctioneer nowhere to be found.

Chloe gets an idea for her case during the raid when she finds the hidden door the auctioneer uses to escape. This sends her back to the crime scene to have one last look. She and Dan find a trap-door under the carpet leading to an underground passage where they find a key that only an LAPD officer would have.

Lucifer on the other hand goes straight for the auctioneer at his house where he has them mounted on the wall. Lucifer shows him the true face of the devil and gets his answer as to who tipped him off. If it wasn’t obvious, it was Amenadiel that orchestrated the whole thing. He stole the wings and tipped the man off. So to spite him, Lucifer burns his own wings so he can never use them again. Then he tells Amenadiel that he is never going back to Hell.

The episode closes with Lucifer content with the day’s events. He tells Mazikeen that he does not want to return to Hell and that if she wanted to go she was more than happy to leave. Maz tells Lucifer she will stay by his side until the end then walks off and is shown to have one of his feathers in a box. Chloe stops by to recap her adventures as well. The two have a moment and take a shot. Then we see Officer Malcolm being taken off life support, only to have what looks like Amenadiel reviving him.

Final thoughts: Another solid episode from the Lucifer team. I give the episode an 80%. The show starts with a great song (Tove Lo – Talking Body) and a great misdirect, with having us think Maz is just having a little fun. But no, the Dark One is torturing people to find information on the whereabouts of his wings. Lucifer’s relationship with Chloe is getting stronger where we see him rely on her a bit more than she relies on him.

I do appreciate how they handled the divinity of the wings throughout the episode. I understand now that the wings were a fake, but when that auctioneer revealed the wings, people were in utter awe of them. Even the auctioneer, who was an atheist, was begging Lucifer to not take them away.

As for the police procedural aspect of the show, it seems to work for now. This being a Vertigo/DC property there is always the chance it could open up into the Multiverse and we could visit some of the homes in the Sphere of the Gods. I doubt they would ever bring in Apokolips and/or New Genesis. I could, however, see them taking hasty turns in season 2 or 3 (if it lasts that long), and Lucifer could travel to Dream, Heaven, Underworld, Nightmare, or Skyland. Hopefully, the Endless can make an appearance and give us at least Dream on the small screen.

Now I am very speculative about Malcolm’s partner, Anthony Paolucci (Lochlyn Munro), and also Dan. Dan has been trying to get Chloe to stop investigating the case from day one. That either means he knows way more than he should, or he was the one who dropped that key. Anthony, on the other hand, just doesn’t look like a man who is grieving for the loss of his partner. He seems to be very animated when talking about Malcolm, like he is already dead. He isn’t. He is just comatose.

Do you think Dan or Anthony is the dirty cop or is it someone else? Did Amenadiel revive Malcolm to atone for betraying and beating up Lucifer or does he have plans for him? What other divine objects could pop up? Let me know what you think.

Mase Takes On This Week’s GOTHAM and LUCIFER

top picNames of the Episodes:
GOTHAM “Wrath of the Villains: Mad Grey Dawn”
LUCIFER “A Priest Walks into a Bar”

Monday nights we are blessed with two DC comics shows. Although DC is known for their multiverse, these shows do not directly relate to one another. Sure Lucifer is the Prince of Darkness and ultimately resides in Hell, and Gotham is usually considered Hell to the Heaven that is Metropolis, but none the less, the two shows only share an evening with each other and not a universe (yet).

Gotham started as a gritty crime drama following Jim Gordon as he sets off on his career in the GCPD with his first case being the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne. Now in it’s sophomore season, the writers over at the show have turned it up to 11 on the crazy scale. We have villains that are nuts, and they are only going to get crazier as Doctor Hugo Strange acquires them in his secret lab.

The other FOX DC show is the police procedural Lucifer. After this past episode, it is apparent that Lucifer will be going to Hell at some point. Whether it is this season or the next, Lucifer will need to get a little wacky to keep the fans coming back. Unfortunately, one of the best parts about the original comic book (Sandman) probably won’t make it into the show. Morpheus, the Dream King, is tied up in a movie deal that did just see Joseph Gordon Levitt walk away from recently. But that’s not to say FOX won’t do something crazy like have the Sandman movie crossover with the TV show. Warner Brothers owns Sandman (much like WB produces LUCIFER, it still airs on FOX) so while unlikely, Spider-Man (Sony Pictures) is in Civil War(Marvel Studios)…hmmm.

Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society.
Spoilers will follow. You have been warned.

Last episode on GOTHAM, Bruce faced his parents killer Matches Malone. Luckily for the boy billionaire, Matches wasn’t a threat and Bruce was able to talk himself out of killing him. Bruce sets the gun down and walks out the door, only to have Gordon rush up the stairs to see Bruce and then hear a gunshot as Matches kills himself. Bruce left a note for Alfred. It told him that he would be living on the streets with Selina for a while so that he can learn how to live without his money.

The episode begins at the Gotham Museum of Art where we find some very Schumacher-esque Batman art. Edward Nygma is there to begin his reign as “The Riddler”! After setting off a fake bomb, he steals a painting and spray paints the signature green ‘?’ to signify that a clue is here. You may be wondering why did he do this? He is the Riddler. All in good time.

Back at the precinct, Gordon and Bullock are briefed on the morning’s activities at the art museum. After the run down, Gordon is told by the Captain that Internal Affairs was re-opening the Galavan case based on some new evidence. Obviously Gordon continues to deny what happened. Captain Barnes isn’t buying the story, but he has no evidence that Gordon killed Galavan.

Now we have our reason for E. Nygma’s game heist. It is to distract Gordon while also systematically breaking down the respect people have for him. Penguin told Nygma what happened at the docks that night of Galavan’s murder. Nygma believes Gordon is going to catch him for the murder of Ms Kristen Kringle. Gordon only recently started looking into Ms Kringle’s disappearance, but we all know that he would have eventually figured it out.

Anyway, this was a huge episode for Riddler fans. We did not get the crazed killer version, no no no, we got a semi-sophisticated clever version of the Riddler. One who seems to focus more on the puzzle of the crime then he would on how many people will die. Which is a nice change of pace from the mayhem that most of the criminals on Gotham bring.

Throughout the episode Gordon is trying to just be his normal self, but Riddler is just leading him around. The end of the episode wrap up explains how Nygma followed Gordon around to collect the evidence necessary to frame him for the murder of Theo Galavan! It really was a brilliant way to treat us with our first “real” Riddler action. He was even cold when the recent Arkham Asylum Graduate(sane?) Oswald Cobblepot showed up tarred and feathered; he just turned him away and told him that the ‘…new you is kinda freakin’ me out’. And what better way to ice the cake than a bad riddle before a kill. “What do you call a tavern of black birds? A crowbar!” Which would be a murder.

The episode ends with a 4 week time jump, and Gordon is off to Blackgate Prison with Bullock saying he was going to find who set him up. I don’t know why he waited 4 weeks to tell him that but I guess Riddler was good at clearing his tracks. It is nice to see the show jump forward. David Mazouz is doing a fantastic job with his Bruce Wayne. If the show wants to jump forward in time to make him about 21 or 22 and then make him the Batman, that would be sweet.

It was a solid episode overall. The introduction to the Riddler was a nice touch to this long and drawn out origins story. I am upset that we didn’t get any Harvey Dent this episode. I mean seriously, Jim Gordon is going to prison for murder of another cop and we don’t even get one courtroom scene with Harvey? The Bruce and Selina storyline is a little bland right now to say the least. It was nice to see Ivy play a small part in an episode. She is seen cultivating some magic mushrooms for the scheme to steal the gang’s money.

Oh and lest I forget, Penguin met his father, Elijah Van Dahl (Paul Reubens) in this episode. The two showed up at Penguin’s mother’s grave at the same time and exchanged stories. Elijah welcomed him with open arms and invited him to come back and live with his family. Not all as it seemed so I’m going to leave the speculating for the comments.

Up next on FOX is the police crime drama Lucifer. I do highly praise this show for what it is worth. Tom Ellis’ portrayal of Lucifer Morningstar is compelling. When this show was announced, One Million Moms began a petition to keep it off the air and consequently continue to have that same petition. They believe that Lucifer being portrayed as cool is “spiritually dangerous”. Well after this week it seems that God has a plan.

Since the burning of the wings in episode 7, we have seen Amenadiel take on a much more sinister role. We learned that he is in charge of Hell in the absence of Lucifer. Ergo, Amenadiel controls who goes in, and who comes out. We learn that the not-so-dead Malcolm was actually in Hell for 30 seconds before Amenadiel pulled him back to his body. Amenadiel has done this so that Malcolm can kill Lucifer (Lucifer caught the feels, now he is mortal – we think).

It seemed as though this episode was a filler episode, just to get us to the next story. It was funny watching Lucifer and priest playfully discuss faith. We get some great scenes in the bar (dueling pianos) and even when the priest dies he gives Lucifer something to think about. Detective Dan is still a douche, but we can actually hate him now because he was Malcolm’s shooter.

I do hope Lucifer embraces the crazy and weird. For right now, it is nice to have Lucifer on the couch discussing his feelings and to watch him do some good in the world. But at some point, what if we do get to go to Hell? I am hoping for Dante Alighieri’s Inferno (the first part of the epic poem Divine Comedy) being retold with Lucifer as the main character. If this is the case, this first season is him in the first circle, Limbo. As the show continues on, we could see him come out the other side as the ruler of Hell once again, but we could also see him travel off to the other worlds to help super heroes in the DC Multiverse.

The 100News has been slowly trickling out about what shows will be at Comic Con this year, and the biggest announcement so far has been the 21 shows that Warner Brothers is bringing along!  They are basically taking a rest on Saturday!  Check out the details!!

WEDNESDAY, JULY 20

6:00–10:00 p.m. Comic-Con and Warner Bros. Television proudly continue our annual Preview Night tradition, with exclusive world premiere screenings of the pilot episodes of five of the most highly anticipated series of the 2016–17 television season — Riverdale, Powerless, People of Earth, Frequency and Time After Time — as well as a brand new episode of Teen Titans Go! and the debut of Justice League ActionBallroom 20

  • Riverdale: Things aren’t always what you expect in Riverdale. Based on the iconic characters from Archie Comics and produced by Berlanti Productions (The Flash, Supergirl, Blindspot, Everwood), this one-hour drama is a bold, subversive take on the surreality of small-town life. As a new school year begins, the town of Riverdale is reeling from the recent, tragic death of high school golden boy Jason Blossom — and nothing feels the same. Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) is still the all-American teen, but the summer’s events made him realize that he wants to pursue a career in music — and not follow in his dad’s footsteps — despite the sudden end of his forbidden relationship with Riverdale’s young music teacher, Ms. Grundy (Sarah Habel). Which means Archie doesn’t have anyone who will mentor him — certainly not singer Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray), who is only focused on her band, the soon-to-be-world-famous Pussycats. It’s all weighing heavily on Archie’s mind — as is his fractured friendship with budding writer and fellow classmate Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse). Meanwhile, girl-next-door Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) is anxious to see her crush, Archie, after being away all summer, but she’s not quite ready to reveal her true feelings to him. And Betty’s nerves — which are hardly soothed by her overbearing mother, Alice (Mädchen Amick) — aren’t the only thing holding her back. When a new student, Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), arrives in town from New York with her mother Hermione (Marisol Nichols), there’s an undeniable spark between she and Archie, even though Veronica doesn’t want to risk her new friendship with Betty by making a play for Archie. And then there’s Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) — Riverdale’s Queen Bee is happy to stir up trouble amongst Archie, Betty, and Veronica, but Cheryl is keeping secrets of her own. What, exactly, is she hiding about the mysterious death of her twin brother, Jason? Riverdale may look like a quiet, sleepy town, but there are dangers in the shadows. Riverdale is from Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios, with executive producers Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Blindspot), Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Supergirl, Glee), Sarah Schechter (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Blindspot) and Jon Goldwater (Archie Comics). Riverdale premieres midseason on The CW. Become a fan of Riverdale on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/CWRiverdale, and follow the show on Twitter at @CW_Riverdale.
  • Powerless: It’s a Super Hero’s world. We just live in it. As the first comedy series set in the DC Universe, Powerless is the story of Emily (Vanessa Hudgens – High School Musical), a young insurance adjuster specializing in regular-people coverage against damage caused when Super Heroes and Super Villains treat the city like their own personal battleground. Taking care of insurance needs one by one, Emily and her team of co-workers might not have any superpowers, but they are out to make a difference in people’s lives and prove that you don’t need to have powers to be powerful! From Warner Bros. Television and executive producer Ben Queen (Cars 2) and based on characters from DC, Powerless premieres midseason on NBC. Become a fan of Powerless on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/NBCPowerless, and follow the show on Twitter at @NBCPowerless.
  • People of Earth: From Emmy® winners Conan O’Brien (Conan) and Greg Daniels (The Office, Parks and Recreation) and creator David Jenkins comes People of Earth, a half-hour single-camera comedy series about a support group for alien abductees. People of Earth centers on skeptical journalist Ozzie Graham (Wyatt Cenac – The Daily Show) who investigates the group to write about its members’ supposed alien encounters. The more he digs into their oddball claims, however, the more he realizes a semblance of truth to their stories and possibly even signs that point to his own alien abduction. The onetime outsider now finds himself a part of this eclectic group of misfits, all the while struggling with the idea of knowing that life could exist beyond our world. The series is executive produced by O’Brien, Daniels, Norm Hiscock (King of the Hill), Jeff Ross (Conan), David Kissinger (Eagleheart) and Larry Sullivan; Jenkins is co-executive producer. Produced by Conaco LLC in association with Warner Horizon Television, People of Earth is coming this fall to TBS.
  • Frequency: Based on the New Line feature film, Frequency is the story of a father and daughter who are supernaturally reunited two decades after his suspicious and untimely death. New York detective Raimy Sullivan was only seven when her father, undercover cop Frank Sullivan, abandoned his family in pursuit of a case that led not only to his family’s breakup, but also his eventual death undercover. Always believing her dad died in disgrace as a corrupt cop, Raimy set forth to surpass him in law enforcement, rising through the ranks to detective. But everything she knows changes when somehow Raimy and Frank connect — across two decades — over Frank’s vintage ham radio in the garage. Where once Frank was lost in the shadows of his undercover work in 1996, he has now miraculously been found by his now-grown daughter in 2016. As they forge a new relationship while working together in two time periods to close an unsolved serial murder investigation, their emotional connection transcends time to not only repair the broken bonds of their family, but also defy fate and change the course of destiny. From Lin Pictures in association with Warner Bros. Television, Frequency premieres Wednesday, October 5 at 9/8c on The CW. Jeremy Carver (Supernatural), Toby Emmerich (Frequency film), John Rickard (Horrible Bosses), Dan Lin (Sherlock Holmes films), Jennifer Gwartz (Veronica Mars) and Brad Anderson (Fringe) are executive producers. Become a fan on Facebook at facebook.com/CWFrequency and follow the show on Twitter at @CWFrequency.
  • Time After Time: Using the 1979 novel and movie as a launching point, Time After Time chronicles the epic adventures of a young H.G. Wells. At the age of 28, the 19th century scholar has yet to publish any of his landmark science fiction novels, but his idealistic thinking and radical ideas have led him to actually create a time machine. When his longtime friend — the charismatic (and secretly psychopathic) Dr. John Stevenson, aka Jack the Ripper — finds himself cornered by the authorities at Wells’ London home, he escapes to present-day New York City using the time machine. Naturally, Wells follows, but instead of the Utopian society he imagined would be in the future, he finds a world more aligned to Stevenson’s temperament. Fortunately, Wells meets up with Jane Walker, an assistant curator at a museum staging an exhibition on Wells. As Wells and Jane come together, they will not only play a dangerous endgame with Stevenson, but also find themselves involved with the incredible characters and scenarios that inspired Wells’ War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man, The Island of Dr. Moreau and more. An epic love story charged with danger and adventure, Time After Time gives an unpredictable spin on the mythology of H.G. Wells by looking at the world of today through the eyes of yesterday. Based on the novel written by Karl Alexander and produced by Outerbanks Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television, Time After Time premieres midseason on ABC. Kevin Williamson (The Vampire Diaries) and Marcos Siega (The Following) are executive producers. Become a fan of Time After Time on Facebook at com/TimeAfterTimeABC and follow the show on Twitter at @TimeAfterABC.

6:30 p.m.–7:20 p.m. Riverdale Pilot Screening and Q&A — Things aren’t always what you expect in Riverdale. Meanwhile, girl-next-door Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) is anxious to see her crush Archie after being away all summer, but she’s not quite ready to reveal her true feelings to him. And then there’s Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch)… Riverdale’s Queen Bee is happy to stir up trouble amongst Archie, Betty, and Veronica, but Cheryl is keeping secrets of her own. What, exactly, is she hiding about the mysterious death of her twin brother, Jason? Riverdale may look like a quiet, sleepy town, but there are dangers in the shadows. Riverdale makes its Comic-Con debut with a screening of the complete pilot episode, followed by a Q&A with series stars and executive producers. Riverdale is from Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios, with executive producers Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Blindspot), Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Supergirl, Glee), Sarah Schechter (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Blindspot) and Jon Goldwater (Archie Comics). 7:25–8:15 p.m. Frequency Pilot Screening and Q&A — Based on the New Line feature film, Frequency is the story of a father and daughter who are supernaturally reunited two decades after his suspicious and untimely death. New York detective Raimy Sullivan was only 7 when her father, Frank Sullivan, an undercover cop, abandoned his family in pursuit of a case that led not only to his family’s breakup, but also his eventual death undercover. Frequency makes its Comic-Con debut with a screening of the complete pilot episode, followed by a Q&A with series stars Peyton List (The Tomorrow People, The Flash), Riley Smith (Nashville, The Messengers) and Mekhi Phifer (Torchwood, ER), along with executive producers Jeremy Carver (Supernatural, U.S. version of Being Human) and Jennifer Gwartz (Lethal Weapon, Veronica Mars). 8:20–9:15 p.m. Time After Time Pilot Screening and Q&A — Using the 1979 novel and movie as a launching point, Time After Time chronicles the epic adventures of a young H.G. Fortunately, Wells meets up with Jane Walker, an assistant curator at a museum staging an exhibition on H.G. Wells, the Father of Science Fiction. Time After Time makes its Comic-Con debut with a screening of the complete pilot episode, followed by a Q&A with executive producers Kevin Williamson (The Vampire Diaries, Dawson’s Creek, The Following, Scream movies) and Marcos Siega (Blindspot, The Following, The Vampire Diaries, Dexter, Cold Case, Veronica Mars) and series stars Freddie Stroma (Harry Potter films, Pitch Perfect, Game of Thrones, 13 Hours, UnREAL) and Genesis Rodriguez (Identity Thief, Man on a Ledge, Entourage, Big Hero 6). Based on the novel written by Karl Alexander and produced by Outerbanks Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television, Time After Time premieres midseason on ABC. LUCIFER Season 2 kicks off Monday, 9/19, and over the summer, My Take on TV had the chance to join round tables at San Diego Comic Con to chat with the cast.

Tom Ellis, Lucy himself, was joined by one of this season’s newest additions, Tricia Helfer, who is playing, spoiler alert, his mother! The two gave us the details on what to expect from how Tricia’s Mom character impacts the cast, the family dynamics we’ve already seen, and what she might think of Trixie.

She also let us in on a little secret about the battle of the bands they hold for WB shows shooting up near each other in the ‘Couve 😉

It sounds like we’ll have a great season 2; be sure to check it out in the video above!

LUCIFER’s showrunner Joe Henderson is one of our favorite people to talk to at events like San Diego Comic Con because he has a passion for the show, and an excitement for what LUCIFER will bring in S2 that is unrivaled. His excitement is infectious in the video from our round table as he talks about bringing Tricia Helfer’s Mom to the scene, how she’ll interact with the other characters, as well as bringing Dr Linda into the forefront a bit, what kind of romantic entanglements we might see this season, and above all, the Trixie of it.

Check it out!

Over the summer at San Diego Comic Con, we had the chance to spend time talking to Aimee Garcia who is joining the cast of LUCIFER this summer with a quirky new character that will immediately confuse and surprise Ellis’ Luci. Aimee told us about joining the show, a great scene where she played with some improve in the premiere, and what it’s like working with this cast and crew. She’s a religious woman who works in the scientific field and Lucifer just cannot get a handle on figuring her out.

Have a look at what she teases in the video above!

GOTHAM found itself embracing the dark side in season 2, as RISE OF THE VILLAINS dove into the underbelly of Gotham City, a town in the hands of the charismatic bunch of lunatics who make crime their business.  Hugh Strange went crazy-er, Nygma embraced his inner psychopath, and a long haired Bruce-Wayne doppelganger arrived on the scene, one of many monsters escaping by bus.  In the third season premiere, airing tonight at 8/7c, Jim Gordon is down but not out, as he fights crime as a (broken-hearted) bounty hunter (looking good and seemingly relaxed even under stress), working to apprehend the Indian Hills escapees and make some “easy” cash along the way.  Penguin has a new mission, Valerie Vail (Jamie Chung) arrives on the scene, and the curtain is peeled back just a little bit on the mysterious Court of Owls. The best thing GOTHAM ever did was focus in on the monsters in town (including allowing Erin Richards to embrace her inner insanity), and season 3, subtitled MAD CITY, continues that dive down. Funny, sarcastic, and dark, the show wastes no time getting to the heart of what promises to be an exciting season.

Also kicking off what should be a fun new season is LUCIFER (9/8c).  Lucifer and Amenadiel are in a good place; working together to find Mom, the woman these two are terrified to encounter, now that she’s out of her locked cage in Hell, while also still looking for Maize. Luci is back on the job with Chloe, assuming everything he sees is a message from Mommy Dearest; Detective Douche finds himself in an interesting situation and the whereabouts of Mazikeen are explored.  New series stars Aimee Garcia (DEXTER) and Tricia Helfer (BSG) make their debuts as the quirky crime scene investigator, and well, spoilers: Mama herself. LUCIFER was a surprise favorite of mine from last season – Tom Ellis and Lauren German continue to have a palpable chemistry and I find myself screaming “JUST KISS” whenever they’re together! And for those who swooned when Ellis sang in Season 1, be prepared for more Luci performances, starting right off the bat in the premiere. A show that I think wasn’t given enough credit in S1, Season 2 looks to be going above and beyond, ranking it HIGH on the list of must sees!

At the end of LUCIFER’s Season 2 premiere, after Luci spent the episode looking for dear old escaped-from-Hell Mummy, assuming she was sending him message after message about the havoc she intends to rain down on him, a battered Tricia Helfer crawled into his loft and collapsed in his arms.

When the show returns in two weeks (no new ‘sode against the Pres. debate), we’ll learn more about where she’s been, what she’s thinking, and what comes next.  To get a bit of a jump on those questions, I spent some time with Tricia, talking about joining the show, working with this cast, and where Mom’s head might be.

One of the questions that I had. Were you a fan of the show? Did you know the guys involved? What was it about Lucifer that kind of got you involved coming into Season 2?
I was intrigued by the pilot script. I’d actually read it. I wanted to try and get in on it because I thought it was a really interesting, fun script but I wasn’t available. I was under hold with ASCENSION still. I wasn’t even available to try. From that, I hadn’t watched the series right away, but then I caught up with it on “binging,” as they say. I thought it was just a really fun, well done show. It’s a show that has a specific tone and I remembered that from reading the pilot. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. With LUCIFER, I think they just really found the right tone. I was surprised at how funny it was. That’s been a real pleasure for me, is getting to do a show that … There’s a lot of humor in it. There’s a lot of I’m reading the script and I’m laughing out loud.

Yet, you’re also dealing with … Especially with the introduction of my character, especially for me and my boys (laughs), dealing with dysfunctional family drama, and mother issues, and father issues, and brotherly issues, and … It’s been a lot of fun getting to play a very well-rounded, layered character, which I think is going to surprise the fans. She’s certainly been set up as this evil character coming in.

The boys have had to obviously deal with dysfunction on their own together, dealing with dad, and dealing together. How does Mom impact their relationship?
With the arrival of Mom, definitely impacts Amenadiel and Lucifer and their relationship together because, at first, they think they have to band together against her. We see that, not only at the end of Season 1, the very end, but also the opener. We pick up with that and their concern about mom coming in. From there, their recollection is they know that mom has a strong dislike for humanity, so they’re concerned not only about … She’s also been held in. She was banished down to Hell and held there for a very long time by Lucifer, who never once came to speak to her. There are, of course, concerns from their own side, but they’re also concerned what she might do to humans down in Los Angeles.

When you meet her, you quickly realize there’s a lot more to her agenda. She certainly does have an agenda, but she’s also, at the end of the day, a loving mother who wants to be with her sons, and wants to clear the air, and wants to … There’s been a lot of miscommunication between them. There’s been a lot of things that the boys think happened that actually happened differently. Sometimes parents maybe shield the truth from kids. There has definitely been some miscommunication, so Mom is wanting to set things right, but she also has her own agenda. That will be revealed as the episodes go along.

It’s so interesting to me that this is not necessarily a show rooted in realism with Lucifer and Amenadiel,
(laughs) No

But you can relate to these characters on such a basic level that everybody has that mother issue or brother issue. It’s so relatable. That’s one of the things that stands out for me about the show.
Absolutely. That’s what I talked with Tom (Ellis) and D.B. (Woodside) about as well. They’ve been happy with the introduction of the mom character because it’s given them, also, an opportunity to show different sides, and for Lucifer to show a vulnerability that he doesn’t get to have around most other characters, because he’s dealing with his mother and with issues. We almost see Lucifer as a lost little boy at some times in the second season. It’s been … We’ve got to laugh that we’re talking about celestial beings here and I’m God’s ex-wife. I’m like the supreme goddess, but yet I’m getting hurt because my sons snubbed me or whatever it is. It is fun to have that kind of dichotomy.

LUCIFER: L-R: Tricia Helfer and Tom Ellis in ÒEverythingÕs Coming Up LuciferÓ season premiere episode of LUCIFER airing Monday, Sept. 19 (9:01-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX ©2016 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Michael Courtney/FOX.

LUCIFER: L-R: Tricia Helfer and Tom Ellis in ÒEverythingÕs Coming Up LuciferÓ season premiere episode of LUCIFER airing Monday, Sept. 19 (9:01-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX ©2016 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Michael Courtney/FOX.

Do you spend the majority of your time with Tom and D.B. or do you get to branch out, interact with Trixie and Chloe? Do you get to interact with everybody?
I will get to interact with everybody, but without giving too much away, predominately in the beginning, the first 2 episodes, the first part of the season, I am dealing with more my sons. There’s definitely a lot of history there to deal with, and also the fact that Mom is in a human form for the first time, and Mom has a strong dislike for humanity. The fact that she’s stuck in an “earthly skin sack,” as she calls it, certainly leads to some comedy. She’s dealing with … Her main focus is obviously her sons, and then also having to deal with the immediacy of this situation of her being in a human form.

As the season goes on, yes, she will end up having dealings with the other characters in the show as well. Maze and mom also have … They have a very strong history and a dislike for one another. She interacts with Maze in the first part of the season as well.

Are you people asking you why is this a show I should be watching? What is it about Lucifer that you think will draw me in? Is there something you’re saying or an answer you have for people about why this is a show for everybody?
I find it a very well-rounded show. There’s not a lot on TV like it right now, where you got the comedy, you’ve got the light-hearted fun, the entertainment. You’ve also got this dysfunctional family drama. Shows like this, there’s a specific … Every show has a specific tone. There’s certainly shows that have more of a specific tone than just your regular cop procedural or something like that, right? Or your regular sitcom or something. Sometimes they get it right, and sometimes they don’t. It’s that unknown quantity that you’re always aiming for, and striving for, and think you’re getting it, but then sometimes it just doesn’t work out.

I think with Lucifer, it’s one of those times that it just worked out. The tone just works. We take, as Tom has said in some of the stuff we’ve done together in terms of interviews and stuff, I think he said it well with we take the job seriously and we take the work seriously, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously. So we have fun while we’re shooting. It’s a really good group of people that gets along really well and is like a family. We take the job seriously, but at the same time we enjoy it. Maybe some of that is what’s showing through and showed through in the first season of … They’re really enjoying themselves and having fun doing it, and I think that translates. If you’re looking for just a really fun show that also hits them in the heart every once in a while, then they should check it out.

I’ve gotten the chance, you say, from the top down, like talking to Joe and Ildy and the writers, they love the material. They love what they’re writing. You guys love what you’re getting. You can sense that, even in just the few ways you interact, that everybody loves what they’re working on.
Yeah. It really has been … Coming into the show at the end of second season, like myself and Aimee Garcia, it’s not always the seamless transition where you integrate new characters. We both came in and felt extremely welcomed and like immediately part of the group. They kind of welcomed us with open arms, or wings I guess, so that’s nice for the 2 newbies coming in as well. But definitely everybody has fun and every time a writer … Every episode when the writer’s up on set … The writers room is really a great group of people as well. It helps when you enjoy what you’re working on.

WonderCon 2017: LUCIFER’s Rachael Harris talks Linda, God, and stunt doubles

In Anaheim earlier in April, MyTakeOnTV joined some of our press colleagues for round table interviews with the cast of LUCIFER at Wonder Con 2017.  Rachael Harris (Dr Linda) was full of excitement about what’s coming for the rest of Season 2, which resumes tonight on FOX at 9/8c.

On learning Lucifer/Maze/Amenadiel’s secrets: “It was very symbolic that she was able to say “I’m going to accept this about you even though you have so much shame and want to hide it.”  There’s a great scene…where I say… “why don’t you trust her?  I’m still here and I still care for you.”  I think that’s all of our greatest fears.  If you see how low self esteem I have, you will run.  It’s such a great thing that she says, no, it’s okay.

On whether there will be repercussions from what happened when we last saw these folks: “Mmm hmm…” she laughs. “You know God appears, Timothy Omundson.  Linda’s reaction to meeting God is pretty awesome.  And then I think what we see, repercussions of her yes, committing to Maze and committing to Lucifer.  Everyone; they’re her friends and she’s very loyal to them.  When some entity tries to get information from her, has catastrophic consequences to it.  And you get to see just how far Linda will go to take care of her friends.  Things come back to haunt her a little bit.  We will get to know more about Linda in one of the one-off’s [next year].”

Asked about what input she has on her character at this point: “I said, I would really enjoy doing some more dramatic aspects of the show, and that’s where I think “Monster” started happening, the episode “Monster” where he revealed himself, and I was like, we can go further!  So they heard me when I said I would like to do something more dramatic.  Things get real.  Scary and honest.”

On what to expect, she teases “I have a stunt double! That doesn’t say anything, but it says something.”

Check out the video above for the full interview with Rachael and be sure to catch all new episodes of LUCIFER through May/June!

WonderCon 2017: LUCIFER’s Lesley-Ann Brandt on what’s next for Maze

While in Anaheim for WonderCon 2017, we had the chance to sit with Lesley-Ann Brandt (Mazikeen) to talk about the return of LUCIFER and what we can expect.  In the video above, she goes into detail about the rewards of playing this character, and how her relationship with Scarlett Estevez (Trixie) is off-screen, among a few other topics.  LUCIFER is back at 9/8c tonight – check out the above for a preview of why to tune in!

On adding layers to this character: “[It’s] very rewarding. I’ve been able to take a character that could very easily just be a bad ass and one note, and give her layers and points of view that maybe the audience didn’t really expect to see so much humanity come through this season, so that’s been really fun to explore.  I think the writers have just been very smart about giving her as many facets as possible and in that, making her really relatable – the friendship wth Linda is super relatable.  Women, two strong women, coming out as a demon, a lot of the people from the gay community were like, i’ve had the conversation, I can relate.”

On Maze and Chloe co-habitating: “I think they saw the chemistry with me and Scarlett, and obviously the antagonistic relationship with Chloe and that would be an interesting dynamic to throw in there.  I thought they were really clever about how they introduced it and where they’ve taken it.”

On Maze’s best trait: “Her loyalty to her friends or people that she cares about.  And I think that’s my most relatable trait, actually to her as Lesley-Ann.  You see that more and more with those relationships like Trixie and Chloe.”

On Maze handling Lucifer being gone: “I don’t think she’s really that happy that she doesn’t know what’s going on, but he’s done this before.  It hits Chloe more than anyone else because of the nature of their relationship and obviously what’s happened, the kiss.  I think she’s probably more annoyed that she doesn’t know what the big picture is, and that comes to a head in 217.”

On Amenadiel: “I think they’ll always be connected in the sense that she did take his virginity, but I think she’s not a girl who is hung up on one specific thing.  Maze, the thing that you’l find out about demons in our show -they have no soul, so they live in the moment and they go with the flow, and that’s very much what the character is. I think they’re always connected because of that, and at the end of that episode, he’s decided to stay and be a part of the team.”

On her relationship with “Trixie” off screen: “I love Scarlett so much.  We’ve had playdates with our dogs.  It’s tricky with her because she has to do school, so she’l finish a scene, and the rules are that she has to do 20 minutes of school, so she goes right to the tutor.  She always comes up and wants to feel the baby; i’ve told her to think of some names to help me.  I’ve always wondered how parents do that with kids in the business, but Sam, her mother, and her dad, they’ve done such an amazing job.  She’s the most normal, down to earth little girl, you’ll ever meet, and still very much a kid, and then come action, so professional and knows her lines. She’s definitely one of my faves; I love my Maze and Trixie scenes.”

LUCIFER is back tonight – you don’t want to miss the new episodes.  This show is so much fun and I’m so glad we’re getting S3 next season!

WonderCon 2017: Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson preview S2 (and S3) of LUCIFER

Two of MToT’s favorite showrunners/EPs are Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson from FOX’s LUCIFER.  Always excited to talk about their show, these two joined us in Anaheim at WonderCon 2017 to talk about the end of Season 2 and what we should expect from Season 3 and the 4 standalone episodes ordered by FOX.

Check out the video above for more, but here are some highlights:

On the four standalones, Ildy says: The four episodes – they call them standalone episodes. they’re really not, in that they a move our characters quite deeper – for example, one episode focuses only on Maze, and we get to really understand what this poor demon who doesn’t have a soul – does she really have a soul? What does it mean to have a soul? And there are also little mythological nuggets that are in each one where somebody just throws out a line, and you go “what did you just say”?

Joe jumps in to add: “What does that mean? We know where we want those episodes to air in Season 3. What we did is we basically broke episodes that if they aired in S2, would set up stories in Season 3, or if they aired in Season 3, they would just more immediately set up the story. hopefully if you’re watching season 3, you’ll be going “was that a standalone or was that a regular episode?” They do fold in rather nicely. We knew no matter what…we wanted them to move the story forward. Personally, that’s what we watch the show for. That’s what I watch all of my shows for. What it allows us to do is play. We made an episode that’s a little darker and weirder. we made an episode that’s a little more fun. The Maze episode is like a Bond movie. It’s really cool. It’s both not our show at all and it’s totally our show. It’s sort of let us open up what the show is about.”

Did these new episodes impact the end of Season 2? Joe tells us, “Not at all. What’s nice, we were always building an 18 episode arc. They didn’t try to make us fat, they didn’t try to make us add 4 episodes in the middle. They ere like we love this arc, we’re really happy with where you are. have fun. they really encouraged us to go off format.”

On crossovers with the DC universe on TV: Joe says, “The thing about our show – we can kind of do anything. we have a little bit of a license to we don’t take our selves too seriously, i think if Batman did show up, I don’t know, maybe not so weird!”

LUCIFER starts with all new episodes tonight at 9/8c – definitely check it out!!

WonderCon 2017: Kevin Alejandro previews LUCIFER’s return

At WonderCon 2017 early in April, we spent some time with fellow press at round tables to discuss what’s coming next for LUCIFER and “Detective Douche” when new episodes resume tonight at 9/8c.  Kevin Alejandro previewed what he wants to see for Dan, and how he and Tom sometimes improv their way through bro-scenes.

On being heretofore known as “Detective Douche”: “That’s given the audience something to hold onto.  Don’t take it away if it’s not broken.”

On wanting to see Dan become a villain: “He always makes these decisions, for good reasons, but it always ends up being sort of shady, you know, like shooting a person.  I would like something big to happen, he has to make another choice; it just pulls the rug out from everything…he turns into like the ultimate force/villain to reckon with.”

On seeing more Dan/Lucifer buddy cop moments: “Definitely, you will definitely see that.  When they wrote a scene where Dan has finally had enough of it….he steps up to him.  That opened up a whole new world of Dan stepping up to Lucifer so now there’s all of this really funny banter back and forth that they put into the show and that we also improv back and forth.  I think people are really going to enjoy that aspect, instead of always being a doormat.”

On repercussions from what we’ve seen: “Dan, he’s in the dark, about this whole celestial world.  he’s kind of like the dumb guy…he definitely has encounters with them, but he still doesn’t know this world that is Lucifer….I think eventually I kind of want to know, because it gives this guy a lot of, strange, constantly calling him weird.  I think it’s really funny that he doesn’t know…It’s so logical. It would just turn his world upside down.”

On the rest of this season: “They’re peppering a bunch of different things in – we’re in a whirlwind of trying to finish Season 2 and pepper in storylines and details that make you want to come back for season 3.  The good thing about getting a Season 3 is that it gives us time to breathe and deal with them on a more evolutionary level, let it breathe, instead of rushing through it.”

On the standalone episodes: “There is a Dan episode.  It’s not just me; but I’m pretty heavy in it.  You get to figure a little bit how he ticks.  I think it’s really awesome that they’re able to do that.  Give everybody a chance to be their own person and let you guys decide if you like or dislike him.”

On having scenes with other cast members: “I love, love, love working with Tom and Lauren. But I just did a really cools scene with Rachael. That woman is amazing.  You cannot look her straight in the eye without laughing. We are going to see other worlds, they’re peppering things in. I do get some scenes with Amenadiel…you get to see how those two guys could have a relationship, or how they relate.”

On improvisation: “We do what they write because they’re really good at it; you don’t have to change it because they’re so good.  The directors and eeeryone is really good about giving us one take to do whatever we want to.  Sometimes it makes it into the show and sometimes it doesn’t.  We know these guys so well!  We can ham them up; sometimes we ham them up and they’re like…..”that’s too much!””

On the end of the season: “Your socks will be BLOWN off!  Enter into a world that you don’t expect!”
